Synopsis:

In the early 1980s, Habu Jōji, an orphan with no ties, has an obsessive passion for high-altitude mountaineering and an exceptional talent for climbing. He successfully tackles one challenge after another in the Japanese Alps, but while the members of his climbing club admire his feats, they do not like him—his personality is too intense. When an accident leads to the death of his young climbing partner, Kishi, he is suspected of having let him die. He disappears.

Years later, Fukamachi Makoto, a journalist for a mountaineering magazine who had been accompanying a Japanese expedition in the Himalayas, extends his stay in Kathmandu. One evening, a stranger offers to sell him a camera that bears a striking resemblance to the one carried by the English mountaineer George Mallory, who disappeared in June 1924 on the north ridge of Everest. He is skeptical and refuses to buy it, but then he happens to witness an argument between the man who tried to sell him the camera and another man whom he believes to be Habu. Traveling between Japan and Nepal, he then embarks on a full-fledged, almost detective-like investigation to piece together—through numerous flashbacks—Habu’s journey, and ultimately manages to obtain the camera by tracking down Habu.
